About us

A place to garden, relax and make new friends

Welcome to Sherwin Park Community Garden, a green oasis cultivated by the collaborative efforts of passionate residents in partnership with the City of Parramatta and the NSW Government. Since 2021, our dedicated team has envisioned, designed, and tirelessly developed this thriving space in the heart of North Parramatta.

Driven by a shared commitment to fostering community spirit and sustainability, we've woven together ideas, expertise, and sheer determination to bring this vision to life. Our journey has been one of partnership, innovation, and a deep-rooted belief in the power of communal green spaces.

The garden gates opened in April 2024, and symbolises the culmination of countless hours of planning, design, and unwavering dedication. It's poised to become a vibrant hub where neighbours can connect, learn, and cultivate not just plants, but also friendships and a sense of belonging.

At Sherwin Park Community Garden, we're more than just a patch of land - we're a testament to what can be achieved when a community unites with a shared vision. Join us on this journey as we prepare to open our gates and invite you to experience the beauty and bounty of this green haven.

Welcome to the Garden

Nurturing Growth:

A sustainable place for our community to learn and connect.

Our vision is to create a thriving and inclusive community garden that serves as a vibrant hub for connecting people, cultivating sustainable practices, and fostering a sense of belonging. We envision a place where individuals of all ages and backgrounds come together to grow produce, share knowledge, promote environmental stewardship, and nurture a strong sense of community.

Our Story

From something old to something new

After the closure of Sorrell Lane Community Garden, we wanted to see if there was community interest in a new community garden, so we decided to run a survey. Over 120 residents completed the survey, with 97% in favour of a new community garden, so we approached Council to explore the initiative.

Council supported the initiative, however, our proposed site at Belmore Park posed some difficulties due to large established trees causing excessive shading. However, a funding opportunity arose in the Dundas ward which led to the new location at Sherwin Park.

Once the site was confirmed, a community group was then formed, a garden committee was established and the planning process began. This involved working with Permaculture Sydney West to map out our vision for the garden, developing the management plan, working with Council to design the garden, as well as fundraising. We also hosted a suite of working bees to rejuvenate the gardens around Sherwin Park (you may have seen the sunflowers and the new planters at the entrance). These events aimed to build community and keep the momentum going for the garden while we awaited the community garden's grand opening.

Construction of the garden began in late 2023 and was officially completed at the end of December of that year. Since then, the committee has been finalising the organisation and preparations to open the garden to members and volunteers. Some key projects require completion before the garden can begin to be planted. The committee will begin accepting member applications in February 2024 and commence planting and regular activities in Autumn 2024.
